CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Toushiro Hitsugaya
AGE: ~125, though he appears to be anywhere between 10-13 y.o.
CANON: Bleach

CANON HISTORY: lol
CANON PERSONALITY:
Toushiro Hitsugaya is a product of circumstance, having sacrificed a great deal of his childhood to learn how to grow up at a young age. Being the youngest Captain in Gotei 13 history, he's well-respected among his subordinates as well as his fellow soldiers. However, he is still a child, and thus works very hard to maintain his mature demeanor so people don't treat him as such.

He harbors low to no tolerance for being addressed as anything but "Captain Hitsugaya", and hates it when people think he's an elementary school student. In fact, he hates being acknowledged as a little kid as well as being called "Shorty" more than anything (he is, indeed, very short). Likewise, he detests anything that he considers to be childish, such as children's toys and school uniforms that appear to be fitting for young boys; and to add to his bitter attitude, he detests sweets and prefers food like fermented beans. Yeah. He is still young though, and his roots come from being a "child prodigy" for having an impressive level of intelligence and a lot of talent for someone so young. He is also incredibly disciplined, even more so than some of his older subordinates and fellow Captains.

Hitsugaya is always very diligent in getting his paperwork done, as well as being on time to and completing various missions in both the Soul Society and in the Human World. He doesn't like to beat around the bush and is always very direct, so as to not waste time or energy on unnecessary things. This attitude carries in his speech manerisms, too: Hitsugaya is extremely blunt and curt, only saying what he means and what he needs to. He's all about efficiency and making himself as clear as possible. Rarely ever does he allow himself to "have fun", and will often berate his lieutenant, Rangiku Matsumoto, for doing leisure activities while they should be working. While there have been attempts to try to get Hitsugaya to lighten up, they rarely ever work because he works himself down to the bone and just doesn't stop.

This is a testament to how he takes his duties incredible seriously, however, and you can't really blame him. He's a child in one of the highest, most honorable positions in all of Soul Society, standing beside and above others who are much older than him. He doesn't really have room to act like his age--though some people often think and treat him like he should--because he needs to be respected in his position. And Hitsugaya's definitely worthy of respect; while he is naturally talented, he does not get complacent, and continuously works on improving himself and his abilities.

However, his talent has also put him leagues above his peers, so he hasn't really gotten the chance to make many friends. Hitsugaya was never allowed to have a proper childhood, his spiritual energy being too strong for him to safely live at home with his adoptive grandmother. Furthermore, the other kids in the area were afraid of him, isolating him and leaving him with only his grandmother and Momo Hinamori to talk to. After she left to attend the Shinigami Academy, Hitsugaya followed her years later, but was just as isolated there probably due to a number of factors such as his age, his odd hair color, and his talent. Because of this, he's not the most friendly or the most open of people, used to being by himself and often times preferring it that way. He's not a complete loner, however, and has some rather valuable relationships he holds dear.

Hinamori is one of the most important people to Hitsugaya, and he is entirely devoted to protecting her for as long as he's around. She's his childhood friend--an older sister figure to him--and his desire to protect her and his grandmother drove him to becoming a Shinigami. She was the only child in the Rukongai District he grew up in to befriend him, being one of the only people able to break through his icy exterior. Hinamori gets special treatment in that she's the only one who is allowed to get away with addressing him by his given name, and doesn't get seriously upset with her when she uses nicknames with him. Hurt Hinamori, and Hitsugaya will make it his goal to make sure you never touch her again.

Another one of his notable relationships is the one he holds with Rangiku Matsumoto. has also earned Hitsugaya's respect in that context. Because she's his lieutenant, he recognizes Matsumoto's abilities, and believes that she's able to fight her own battles. In return, Matsumoto is usually always seen by her Captain's side, and is willing to protect him at all costs. It also turns out that they've become really close over the years they've worked together in the Tenth Division. It's become a routine for Hitsugaya to berate Matsumoto for not doing her paperwork, as she usually sneaks off to have a few drinks or go shopping--anything that isn't work, really. But while this is probably a punishable offense by Soul Society standards, Hitsugaya has never seriously punished her for this. Also, when Matsumoto was going through a difficult time, Hitsugaya let her sleep in their office without protest. Subtle little things like these are his way of showing he cares, and while they may not be visible to the average person, those who know him can recognize that he's not as cold as he tries to make himself seem.

Ironically, even though he reminds his subordinates to not mix personal motives with work, Hitsugaya's relationships are what hinder his ability to do as such. He's shown numerous times making irrational decisions that are fueled by his desire to protect and help the people he cares about. Hitsugaya had endangered himself during the two events in which Aizen had severely wounded Hinamori, by charging recklessly with only one thing in mind: to kill Aizen, despite the fact that Aizen's clearly much more powerful. He was also even classified as a traitor at one point after he abandoned a mission to chase after the enemy, Kusaka, who'd been Hitsugaya's friend in the academy. Soul Society had the impression that he had been meaning to join with the enemy; though this was not the case, Hitsugaya was aware of it and did not bother trying to clear his name, willingly abandoning his post as a Captain to presumably fight Kusaka as his equal--as his friend.

The word "friend" is not to be taken lightly in Hitsugaya's case; if he considers you to be a friend, he damn well means it. He rarely ever goes out of his way to help others with their problems, believing that they should deal with things themselves. He holds the same standard to himself and has a hard time asking others for help. He's pretty reserved with his feelings and his emotions, and even a glimpse of anything that isn't irritation or anger is hard to find with him. However, if he's willing to open up to you and show any sort of kindness towards you, consider it well-deserved.

If he had more time, maybe he would have learned to open up, make friends and enjoy childhood; but that isn't the case here, and Hitsugaya's a kid who's just had to grow up way too fast. It's a shame his height didn't grow as fast as his maturity.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Just gonna casually drop his wiki link for a more expansive, detailed explanation on just about everything Hitsugaya can do.

Intelligence. Hitsugaya, both in Recolle and in canon, possesses a high level of intelligence that surpasses even that of most of his seniors. Why he’s so smart, canonically, we’ll just never know; it’s no mistake that he deserves the title of ‘child genius’, however. Hitsugaya is a master tactician and knows how to make the most of the resources he has. He is also quite perceptive in that he can tell when something’s happening behind the scenes--though he won’t always catch on to specifics, he usually has the means (and the brains) necessary to bring even the most well-hidden of plans to fruition.

Combat Expert. He’s skilled in hand-to-hand combat as well as in the art of swordsmanship. In Bleach, there are several methods of combat a shinigami can use other than martial arts and basic swordsmanship: the most notable one that is unique to shinigami is known as Kido. You can look at Kido like magic, as they are essentially spells that require an incantation to cast (if you aren’t skilled enough). Hitsugaya can use even the highest levels of Kido without these incantations. He can also Shunpo, or flashstep, to travel quickly as well as dodge attacks. Even if he’s kind of shit at dodging in general…...

Okay here’s where we get into his Zanpakuto abilities:

Basically a Zanpakuto is a sword that contains a mind of its own, which can only be heard and unlocked by high-ranking shinigami. It has cool powers and shit. In its sealed form, it is a standard sword; when it is released, however, it can take on either a Shikai or a Bankai form. Hitsugaya’s Zanpakuto is named Hyourinmaru.

- Shikai. A Shikai is the first released form of a Zanpakuto, and it changes shape and gains abilities. Using Hyourinmaru’s Shikai form, Hitsugaya can control water and ice and bend it to his will. He can create ice walls, place traps on the ground that freeze his opponents when stepped on, and summon Hyourinmaru as a giant ice dragon to attack his enemies.

- Bankai. This is the second and final form of a Zanpakuto, and takes years to achieve (unless you’re Ichigo Kurosaki). It is very difficult and only the highest ranking shinigami are able to pull this off, essentially. Hitsugaya’s Bankai is called Daiguren Hyourinmaru. Activating his Bankai summons three ice flowers behind him. Once every petal of every flower disappears, his Bankai deactivates. However his Bankai is also slightly broken because as long as there is water in the air, his Bankai can regenerate. He also grows ice wings so that’s cool.

There’s quite a few things he can do so I’ll list the most important ones here:
- The radius of his freezing abilities is much greater in this form.
- He can create a clone of himself out of ice, though he can only do this once per battle.
- He can wrap his wings around himself to shield from attacks.
- Ice pillars.
- As of the last arc, Hitsugaya’s “completed” Bankai allows him to age up to his older self so he can achieve his fullest potential. In this form, he can instantly freeze objects at any size with one swipe of his hand. He can also freeze everything in front of him after building up his power for four seconds.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Toushiro Hitsugaya
AU AGE: 15
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Hitsugaya looks more ordinary: his hair is black instead of white, and his eyes are a dark brown instead of turquoise. He’s also skinnier without the muscle he put on from being a shinigami. He’s also 4’11” now!! He grew. But he’s still really short.

AU HISTORY:
I’ve been granted permission by the players of the characters in this section to mention them as part of Hitsugaya’s history!

- Born in Tokyo, Japan to two Japanese parents. His family was poor, however; his father had lost his job and they had to give Hitsugaya up for adoption when he was only two years old.

- He was taken to the Recolle orphanage, where his parents believed he would be able to find a better family and start a better life. He was a pretty grumpy kid and didn’t really warm up to anyone else growing up; he developed bad habits because there were so many kids and nobody to really watch him 24/7 and correct his behavior.
Hitsugaya was adopted when he was 5 by Elda Marker.

- Elda doted on him a lot and absolutely spoiled him, even if he didn’t necessarily want or need any of it. It felt weird to be a part of a rich household, but he just sort of rolled with it?

- Hitsugaya’s still a natural genius in this AU, so he wound up skipping the first grade; hence why he’s a bit younger than his peers. As a result, since middle school, he’s been asked countless times to help out his classmates with their homework. This gradually escalated into people outright bribing him to do their homework for them, which Hitsugaya always declines because hello?? Do your own shit, people.

- Growing up, Hitsugaya’s always felt an emptiness, knowing that he was adopted. He never really knew his biological parents. In an attempt to get in touch with his roots to feel closer to his origins, he started studying Japanese culture and language by himself. Hitsugaya taught himself basic conversational phrases as well as how to read and write the alphabet. Kanji’s still a problem for him, though.

- He started ice skating lessons at the age of 8 and did this up until he was 13. Hitsugaya was pretty good at it.

- He also began playing soccer a little after he started ice skating. He stopped ice skating to focus on playing for the soccer team for his high school.

- When Toushiro was 12, Elda took in a boy named Silver Bells. It took a while but Silver and Hitsugaya warmed up to one another, and Hitsugaya began to view Silver as his older brother. They got along really well and made for a happy family.
Silver also taught Hitsugaya how to speak Japanese more fluently.

- On December 20th of Toushiro’s 13th birthday, Silver brought home an Xbox as a birthday present. Elda remarked that Silver had no way of getting that kind of money, implying that she knew Silver had stolen it. Elda and Silver got into a rather explosive argument, which resulted in Silver storming out and living on the streets. As a result, Hitsugaya holds resentment for Silver for not owning up to his own wrongdoings and for leaving their family. Silver comes over on occasion but Hitsugaya likes to pretend he doesn’t exist.

AU PERSONALITY:
Hitsugaya is still a general stick in the mud and definitely still has a case of Resting Bitch Face. Just like his canon self, however, he’s a lot softer around the people he cares about and he lets these select people get away with a lot more things (i.e. giving him nicknames without feeling any resentment).

However, in Recolle, Hitsugaya’s level of maturity is vastly different than that of his canon self. Without bearing the burden of being a Captain in the Soul Society, Hitsugaya doesn’t feel as strongly about having to prove himself to those around him. He still tries to act older than his age since he’s still the youngest among his peers--though the difference in age is very minor--but he’s not as averse to things that are ‘childish’. He’ll eat sweets, he’ll eat ice cream. He’ll play video games, card games, board games.

It’s a lot easier to provoke him in that regard, too. He’s easy to rile up and won’t hesitate to bite back. His short temper still carries over to Recolle, after all; he’s just a lot less mature with going about it sometimes. For instance, he has an antagonistic relationship with Yoshiko Tsushima; the two of them frequently end up arguing--loudly--with one another, calling each other derogatory names and throwing cheap shots left and right.

This is because, again, without feeling like he needs to be the Adult in the situation, Hitsugaya is more verbal and open with how he feels about things. He’s still not really one to smile or compliment others unless it’s well-deserved (such is the life of a tsundere), but he’ll express things like annoyance and disdain more openly without trying to keep his composure. He’s...working on it. Hard when you’ve got a mother with the same issue, though.

Despite him being more honest with his emotions, he still keeps people at arm’s length. He has abandonment issues that he keeps under wraps because of his biological parents and Silver leaving him behind. He’s afraid to let people in, and even his closest friends don’t know as much about Hitsugaya as they should. He keeps his fears hidden as they’re his deepest secrets and takes extra care to keep himself from caring about people too much.

Which...doesn’t always work. Especially in the case of Elda Marker. As much as his mother drives him up the walls, she gave him a new home and took him in when nobody else wanted him. She dotes on him, shows her undying love for him and is probably the one Hitsugaya keeps closest to his heart.
